The remote waters of Nett Lake, Minnesota produce what many experts consider the world's finest wild rice. Each September, as they have for many generations, members of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa (also called Ojibwe or Anishinaabeg) venture out in canoes to harvest wild rice by hand.Tribal members allow no chemicals, motorized boats, or other machinery to disturb the pristine waters so important to their culture and traditional livelihood. Harvested rice is winnowed and parched with special care to ensure flavor, nutritional value, and ease of preparation that is second to none.
